Saturday Morning Font-fest
With no consultations this morning, I’m spending Saturday morning updating the type catalog for 2010 – with my newly discovered iTunes Genius mixes going and drinking coffee out of my K mug.
I love all of the new fonts for this year. There is something for everyone! Some for traditional invitations, some for quirky invitations, some for adorable and sweet invitations, and others for the vintage inspired invitations.

Pantone Color Trends – Part 1
If you’re planning a wedding, how many times have you been asked… “So, what are your colors?”
Sometimes this is the first decision you’ll make, setting the tone, personality, wardrobe, flowers and stationery of your wedding. Other times, your venue might help dictate this choice. Either way, once you pick “your colors” you are in a committed relationship. Either a casual relationship, where you work with a color family, like “blues” or a much more serious tightly held relationship as you trek around town with the swatch from your bridesmaid dresses, looking to match “Ocean Green” Katie’s Advice: Strive for something in the middle of these poles, for ease of planning and your sanity.
Pantone is in the business of color.
Each year, Pantone puts out a series of reports on color trends. What’s the next color for interior design? Paper? and the biggie, FASHION. So what are THE colors for 2010? Published in September 2009 during Fashion Week in New York, the report summary for spring is… BRIGHTS!
Excerpt from the report:
Splashes of Sunshine for Spring 2010
Designers bring splashes of sunshine to the runway for spring 2010. Vibrant brights add a sense of excitement to the color palette, while practical neutrals provide a safety net for cautious consumers. “Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Instead of reinventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own.
Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.” Spring and summer naturally evoke feelings of calm ocean waters and tranquil beach vacations in cool, vibrant, tropical Turquoise. This soothing hue from the blue-green family conjures feelings of escape, especially when paired with Amparo Blue. With more warmth than the typical spring navy, this particular shade of blue is extremely appealing because of its brighter, more energetic attitude. Like the scent of a blossoming flower, Violet lends a romantic air to the warm-weather palette. This intriguing purplish hue is a distinctive addition to any wardrobe.
Yellow has made its mark on fashion and spring will further this trend with gleaming Aurora. Reminiscent of the first glimpse of yellow as the sun begins to rise over the horizon, this shimmering, slightly greenish yellow adds a bold infusion.
Energy continues to surge throughout the warmer hues of spring, leading to provocative Fusion Coral. This inviting orange connects directly to tangy Tomato Purée, this season’s classic red. Pair it with Turquoise for a retro look.

It is January and that means the world is flooded with a new batch of brides-to-be! While you’re probably thinking about Save The Dates, booking your venue and starting to imagine your invitations, its also smart to consider the stationery items you’ll need on the wedding day itself. I love stationery because its beautiful, textured, personal and informative. Over the years, I’ve seen the program loose some of its glory, but I caution and encourage couples to not let this be the item that gets completely cut from your budget. I remind them that while you’re getting ready, peeking out the window at your groom, scurrying around to fix your dress, etc., your guests are there – waiting.
The wedding program is an opportunity to include your guests. Not just have them sit, chat and wait for your big moment. It gives them the opportunity to connect with you, your fiance, your families, your friends standing up with you. And especially if you are having a religious service, the program helps guide them along. People like to know where there are, what to expect. Think of the program as your ceremony GPS. I came across this article on MyWedding.com and wanted to share this bride’s experience (or lack of) with ceremony programs.
Setting the Scene with a Wedding Program
Posted by Mary of mywedding.com December 31, 2008

Include Basic Information such as your full names, the date and location of the wedding ceremony. Also list the names of the parents of the Bride and the parents of the Groom, the name of the Officiant, names of the Wedding Party members, and anybody else who will participate in the ceremony (such as Readers and Musicians). – Katie’s commentary: These people are talented! Let’s give them credit, where credit is due!
Give Them a Play-By-Play of the order of the ceremony, including the names and origins of the musical selections. Here is a sample of the sequence of events, as listed in the program:
- Prelude (“Macarena” by Los Del Rio)
- Processional (“White Wedding” by Billy Idol)
- Opening Words
- Readings (include titles)
- Wedding Vows
- Exchange of Rings
- Pronouncement and Smoocheroo
- Blessing or other Final Words
- Recessional (“Let’s Get it On” by Marvin Gaye)
You May Also Want to Incorporate a few other things to further personalize your program, such as:
- Details about each member of the wedding party such as how you know them, where they live, and how many speeding tickets they’ve gotten. Feel free to include a really embarrassing photo of each attendant from his/her awkward years, too, just for fun. Hey, it’s your day.
- Explanations of ethnic or religious customs or rituals that are will take place during the ceremony
- A note of gratitude to guests, parents or both
- A memorial to deceased loved ones in the form of a photo, quote, or simple statement
- Katie’s commentary: Let them know if you’ll be greeting them and dismissing each row/pew or if you want them to proceed outside for a grand exit complete with bubbles, provide them with your At Home address if guests do not know your address or if you’ll be moving in together now that you’ve tied the knot
To DIY or Not?
Many couples decide to make their own wedding programs using kits and supplies from a stationer, and/or computer programs designed specifically for this task. This can save you valuable money, but it can also be a burdensome “to do” on an already lengthy list. If that’s the case for you, or your creativity is limited, you may want to have somebody else make your programs (you can usually use the same company that does the invitations).
Katie’s commentary: Dont leave the programs to the week of – they will not get done. Print Julep can put your programs together as soon as you know your family members (you should know this!) , bridal party (done!), readings (do this earlier than your officiant asks you to) and music selctions (although this is not completely mandatory to list each song, unless you want to) – chances are, you will know a lot of this information earlier than you realize. If not, find a program from a wedding you went to, or find on online and use it as a checklist for what you need to decide on still.
Get them Into the Hands of Your Guests in one of several ways. Place them in baskets (or some other container that fits your wedding décor) at the ceremony entrance so that guests can grab one when they come in, or simply place one on each chair (beware the wind, if you’re having an outdoor ceremony). Alternatively, you could ask somebody to pass them out to guests as they arrive; this is a great way to include somebody who didn’t quite make the wedding party cut!
Final Tip: Save a program for yourselves! It makes a great addition to your wedding album.
Happy wedding planning!

This is so great! The improv take-over group Improv Everywhere threw a surprise wedding reception for a random couple that walked out of the court house in NYC, having just gotten married in a rushed Courthouse ceremony. Although skeptical at first, who wouldn’t be!, they took them up on the offer and celebrated! The bride is so cute! She looks SO excited and happy at the end. What a great way to remember their wedding day, albeit completely UNPLANNED.

Something for Everyone
Prowling the web for wedding trends and style resources is part of my job description, and one of my favorite spots needs to be passed along!
When designing wedding and event stationery, my main goal is to design an ensemble that really showcases, interprets and reflects a couple’s or company’s personality and identity. When it comes to weddings, not everyone wants pretty bows and lace, and that is why I love Off Beat Bride! There is a wedding out there for everyone! This website is an amazing companion (or antithesis) to The Knot or Style Me Pretty.
From rock-a-billy to vintage Hollywood, feather bouquets to wedding dresses from black to red to white, pink to blue, you’ll find inspiration and some really creative and unique ideas you can incorporate into your own big day. They also now offer Wedpages! So if you want a wedding website with a bit of an edge and unexpected look, these are your ladies.
Below are some of my favorite style ideas, taken from Off Beat Bride.
- DIY bouquet of Christmas ornaments and tulle.
- Not a cake person? How about Wedding Pies!
- No Bride and Groom statues here! Adorable Polaroid photo cake topper.
- Custom Designed Stickers and Buttons as Wedding Favors
- Birdcage Veil and Showcased (not covered-up) Tatoos!

Hitting 2009 Running!

A week after ringing in the new year, things are back to normal! Which means getting ready for the Spring/Summer weddings, and the Knot-sponsored Bridal Show @ Aladdin Shrine Center, near Easton in Columbus on Sunday, January 18th! I hope you all can make it! Its a great show and not nearly as overwhelming as the two-day event @ Vets Memorial last weekend.
I’m REALLY excited to show you the new postcards we’ll be handing out at the show (before they go on sale on ETSY!). You may remember the Off The Market postcards from the August Bridal Show. If not, don’t worry, we’ll have those at our booth too!

Who could say no?!
I hope everyone has an exciting spring with wedding/graduation/mitzvah planning abound! ‘Tis the season for joyous occasions!
I’m also really excited for the brand spanking new Sping/Summer The Knot Ohio magazine that just came out since it has our ad! Its beautifully printed and filled with weddings to drool over and information to file away. This is going to be a great year!
